Getting Out and About in Newport News

People Parks
Did you know that Newport News has 36 parks for you to enjoy? A prime example is Newport News Park, one of the largest municipal parks east of the Mississippi with over 8,000 acres of natural beauty. There are two fresh water reservoirs, beautiful wooded hiking trails, a 5-mile mountain bike trail, a 5.3-mile bikeway, plus a golf course and archery range! Dog Parks
If you prefer an outing to the park with your best furry friend, there are several dog parks you will want to explore, one of which is Fido Field Dog Park. There are off-leash areas for both large dogs and small, and there are water fountains for you and your pet since exercise tends to build up a thirst. The Skate Park
If someone in your family loves skating, there is a modular skate park inside Riverview Farm Park, complete with bank ramps, quarter pipes, grind rails and wedge flats. Fishing Adventures
Love to fish? You’re in the right place. We have both saltwater and freshwater fishing opportunities in the Newport News area. There are miles of saltwater fishing locations off our coast and a variety of freshwater lakes and reservoirs for anglers to enjoy. Do you have your own boat? You will find seven public boat ramps and three marinas for your use. Tip: The Leeward Municipal Marina provides overnight slips, and modern campsites are available at Newport News Park. You will need a freshwater or saltwater fishing license, and you can purchase them at these stores on Jefferson Avenue: Walmart, Wilcox Bait & Tackle, and Dick’s Sporting Goods.
